Hello MP Market Goers!
A Fond Farewell (for now!) to Bures Berry Patch 🌽🎃
This Saturday will be Bures Berry Patch’s last week at the Mineral Point Market for the season! While we’ll miss seeing Farmer Ed and Kathy each week, we’re grateful for all the sweetness they’ve brought us—from spring asparagus to summer berries, and of course, those delicious ears of sweet corn and scrumptious raspberries. 🌽💛
If you need to stock up, now’s the time! BBP will have goodies perfect for carrying you into the fall months, including:
✨ Frozen asparagus soup
✨ Local honey
✨ Dilly beans
While we’ll miss BBP at the market, the Patch will be buzzing with fall fun. 🍂🐓
Starting September 20th, Bures Berry Patch opens its doors for the autumn season. 🍁
Fall Fun at the Patch includes:
🎃 Pick-your-own pumpkins
🌽 A kiddie corn maze (perfect for little adventurers!)
🛞 A classic tire swing
🐓 Feed-the-chickens fun
📸 And plenty of memory-making moments for the whole family
So come say a cheerful “see you soon” to Ed at market this Saturday, and make plans to head out to the Patch for your autumn traditions.

Aaron’s Peppers
Too hot? Too spicy?
Not everyone in your “group” enjoys heat and spice as much as
you do. Surprise. Surprise.
While waiting for the hot peppers to reach their “ripe” color,
thought it may be helpful to share some potential “fixes.”
Note: Not all the suggestions will work in all situations.
Starting with: If you’re cooking “from scratch”
Plan ahead and Taste as you cook
1. Leave the hot pepper out totally.
For example, when making salsa – combine all the ingredients EXCEPT for the hot pepper. Set a portion aside.
Then add the hot pepper.
2. IF you grow your own peppers:
Choose a “no heat” pepper with the same flavor.
Two examples: NuMex Trick-or-Treat pepper has NO
heat, zero SHU* (Scoville Heat Units) but plenty of
that classic, sweet habenero flavor.
OR
Nadapeno which has the flavor and crunch of a jalapeno but is truly heatless.
3. Try using a milder hot pepper.
4. Start out with a very small amount of hot pepper.
May find you have better control using fresh rather than dried hot peppers.
* What is this Scoville Heat Unit?
In the early 1900’s, Wilbur Scoville (a pharmacist) developed a method of finding out how hot a pepper was. It involved
five people taste-testing a solution that was diluted until they could no longer perceive the heat of capsaicin** (kap SAY sin).
Today, an accurate technique called high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is used. The heat level is expressed as
Scoville Heat Units (SHU).
** Capsaicin is the compound that makes chile peppers hot.

Wow, I can’t believe it’s Labor Day weekend already! This may sound strange, but Labor Day is one of my favorite holiday’s of the year. There is always so much to do this time of year with the Iowa County Fair in town and lots of other events happening in the area, not to mention a day off of work! With so much going on, I will be busy enjoying some time with the family and will not be at the Market this weekend. I will keep some honey stocked in our self-service roadside stand this weekend if you need any. I hope everyone has a great holiday weekend and I will see you at the market in September!
Thanks,
Mike

Want to try the incredible Reverse Sear method?
Low & Slow: Season steak and place it on a rack in a 250°F oven. Cook until the desired internal temperature is reached (around 115°F for medium-rare).
Rest: Remove the steak and let it rest for 10-15 minutes.
Sear: While resting, heat a cast iron skillet or grill to high heat. Add a high-heat oil (like avocado oil) and sear for 1-2 minutes per side until a crust forms.
Enjoy! Slice and enjoy a perfectly cooked, juicy steak!
See you Saturday!

Shooting Star Farm
It’s the end of August. How did that happen?! When September rolls around many think the gardens are wrapping up. I say they’re actually ramping up! We’re nearing the hectic cross-over between harvesting summer crops and fall crops (think cucumbers and fall cabbage). Paste tomatoes are just now coming in strong, while storage onions are being pulled and cured in the greenhouse. We even harvested the first of the winter squash – an early variety that will be for sale in a few weeks. With September comes back to school. Charlie is frantically moving belongings to Madison prior to his sophomore year at UW. Franny has already started college classes in Kansas, and Madelyn and Gabe will be back at MP High School in less than a week. I’ve been so lucky to have their help this summer. They’ve been a fun, curious, and hard-working crew. One of our last jobs this week was to pull the zucchini plants. My plants put out huge loads of fruit this year, but the bugs and disease spread like wildfire in the past 2 weeks. Goodbye zukes. Hello arugula! Dry growing conditions means I’ll actually have a harvest this week. I’ll also have salad mix, various tomatoes, beets, fennel, green beans, a variety of sweet peppers, onions, garlic, basil, parsley, sage, chard, kale, mini lettuces, scallions, cucumbers, and whatever else I can scrounge. See you Saturday!
