Open Saturday, Sept. 12th, 8:30-11am in Water Tower Park

Hello MP Market Goers!

It Started With a Jar of Jalapeño Pepper Jam 🌶️

Sometimes a new adventure starts with a little encouragement from the people around you.

For Peggy of Merle’s Midwest Market, it started with a jar of jalapeño pepper jam. She took some to work, and her coworkers loved it. Their response? “You should sell this stuff!”

After a career in the corporate world, Peggy knew she wanted to do something fun when she retired. And so Merle’s Midwest Market was born. The name has a family connection, too —Merle was Peggy’s mother’s name, and her daughter came up with the business name.

Peggy started with traditional jam flavors, but customers soon began giving her ideas of their own. Someone might ask, “Have you ever made…?” and Peggy would go home, find a recipe, give it a try, and sometimes add a whole new item to her lineup.

She enjoys the tried-and-true favorites, too. Four Berry Jam is a hit with kids who love PB&J, while Peggy’s personal favorite is Apple Butter stirred into oatmeal.

And then there are the pickled beets, a tradition she grew up making with her mother.

“They are time consuming and your kitchen may look like a crime scene when you’re done,” Peggy says, “but they are so delicious!”

Peggy also loves making soap, using organic goat milk from her sister-in-law and experimenting with different essential oils. And with fall being her favorite time of year, she says she already has a couple of new recipes in the works. Stay tuned!

Peggy says she’s happy to start her Saturdays at the Mineral Point Market, where “everyone is so happy to be there, customers and vendors alike.”

We feel the same way about having Peggy here. She’s one of those vendors who makes the market feel a little more welcoming. Her friendly smile, easy conversation, and genuine enthusiasm for what she makes are a wonderful addition to our Saturday mornings. We’re lucky to have her, and Merle’s Midwest Market, at the market.💛

See you Saturday!

Our Homestead formerly Magic Light Photography
I hope everyone had a nice long holiday weekend, I know I did. This may sound strange, but Labor Day may be my favorite holiday of the year. The fair is in town, the weather is starting to get a little bit cooler, an extra day off from work, and not all of the obligations that come with some of the other holidays makes me look forward to Labor Day weekend every year!
It was another busy week at the farm. We were able to get all of the mess under our willow tree cleaned up and ready for the rest of the tree to come down, along with a dead Austrian Pine tree. The work on the farm never stops!
I’ll be at the Market again this weekend with lots of raw, local honey, comb honey and our farm fresh, pasture raised chicken eggs, and maybe a dozen duck eggs. Our ducks have really slowed down the egg production, or have found a new hiding spot, so duck eggs are pretty limited. Our hens are also starting to slow down too. If you are looking for eggs at the market, shop early as supplies are limited.
If you can’t wait until Saturday, you can always stop out to the farm for honey and eggs! Our self service stand is available, and stocked with eggs and honey! You can also reach out to me to arrange pick up at the farm!
Hope to see you Saturday!
Thanks,
Mike
