Open Saturday, August 1st, 8:30-11a in Water Tower Park

Hello MP Market Goers!

Have you ever wondered how much work goes into a single pound of honey?

The answer is almost unbelievable.

It takes about 2 million flowers for honey bees to make just one pound of honey. Collectively, those bees will fly nearly 55,000 miles — that’s about twice around the Earth!

And here’s another amazing fact: a single worker honey bee produces only about 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey during her entire lifetime. Every drop is the result of thousands of tiny trips from flower to flower, made by female worker bees whose job is to gather nectar, care for the hive, and help create the honey we enjoy.

This week, Our Homestead, Mike and his family, are bringing something special to the Mineral Point Market for the very first time: comb honey! Honeycomb is exactly as the bees made it — delicate beeswax cells filled with raw honey and sealed by the bees themselves. It’s completely edible and delicious on warm toast, paired with cheese, or enjoyed just as it is. Grab a box this weekend and give it a try!

We hope to see you Saturday!

Wow, I can’t believe we are already heading into August! This summer has been flying by way too fast. It has been another very busy, and HOT 🥵 week on the farm. It’s especially warm when I have to put on my bee suite and deal with a very angry colony of bees!
Even with the heat, and the days getting shorter, the bees, chickens and ducks are still busy providing us with honey and eggs. Not sure I mentioned this is a previous update, but we have also added some guinea fowl, and turkeys 🦃🦃 to our flock. So who knows, maybe we will have some different eggs to offer at some point in the future.
Along with the farm fresh chicken 🐔 and duck 🦆 eggs 🥚 and honey 🍯 this week, I will also be bringing some comb honey! This is not something you see all the time, and supplies are limited so get it while you can! If you are not familiar with comb honey, this is honey still in the wax comb that the bees produce. You can eat the comb and all the sweet golden goodness inside!
Thanks,
Mike

I’ve had just .2” of rain since the 4th of July. It’s getting pretty brown here, but it looks like we’re in store for some downpours on Friday. I’m hoping it won’t impact harvest day too much. We have a lot to harvest: red and romaine lettuces, salad mix, fennel, green beans, sweet peppers, jalapeno peppers, shishito peppers, red tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, scallions, white onions, curly kale, broccoli, eggplant (3 different types), celery, zucchini, green cabbage (the cool cone-shaped variety), beets, basil, dill, parsley, and possibly some arugula. We may get a bit of rain during Market on Saturday, but it will be a lovely day nonetheless. See you then!
