Last Saturday was a wet one.
Really wet.
The kind of Saturday morning where staying home with a cup of coffee probably sounded pretty good. But our vendors came anyway. They hauled their products into the park, set up under the shelter of the pavilion, and waited for customers.
And then you came, too.
With umbrellas. Rain jackets. Wet shoes. And plenty of determination.
We know that getting out to the market on a rainy morning takes more effort, which is why we want to say thank you.
When we say the Mineral Point Market runs rain or shine, we mean it. Unfortunately, farmers markets don’t always happen on perfect mornings. Farms don’t get to choose the weather, and neither do we. There are rainy Saturdays, windy Saturdays, chilly Saturdays, and hopefully plenty of beautiful ones, too.
Our farmers, bakers, makers and artisans count on being able to show up each Saturday, and we’re grateful for the customers who continue to show up for them.
That’s part of being a Saturday morning tradition. We show up, we support one another, and we make the most of whatever the morning brings.
Because at the heart of the market are the people who keep coming back, whatever the weather.
So, to everyone who pulled on a raincoat, grabbed an umbrella and stopped by last Saturday:

We’re back this week with some canned Aronia products as well as woven rugs and some felted woolen accessories (attendance is weather dependent, we are unable to attend if raining). We may have some sheepskin remnant rugs and/or bags made in collaboration with the Driftless Tannery. We will also have a couple sheepskin from Laxey Creek. As I sit here writing this market update, I can see the sun shining for what seems like the first time in weeks! I sure hope it sticks around for Cornish Fest and the Market!
Thank you to everyone who came out to the market last week, in spite of the weather and supported all of the vendors who put in so much time and energy to bring you a great market every week.
Are you getting tired of hearing me say it’s been another busy week on the farm? Well, it has been. 😃 With the cooler temps, we are settling into our winter dearth for the bees. If you are not familiar with the term dearth, it means a serious lack or scarcity of something. For the bees, that means nectar and pollen or in other words their FOOD! So what do beekeepers do to help the bees get through this time? Just like any other livestock, yes bees are considered livestock, you have to feed them. We try to leave them with enough honey so they don’t have to rely on being fed, but not all colonies make enough honey in the summer to get them through the winter. Supplemental feeding helps them fill their hive with enough food to make it through the long, cold winters. We feed the bees with a simple syrup made from sugar and water. This time of year we use a thicker syrup which encourages the bees to store it, and with the heavy sugar content it takes them less work to dehydrate it and store, similar to how they make honey from nectar. So I have been busy mixing 25 pounds of sugar with 1.5 gallons of water to make about 3 gallons of syrup. Each hive will take down about 1 gallon of syrup a week, and with 30 colonies, and a few more weeks of feeding, that’s a lot of syrup. So if you see me at the store with a cart full of sugar, now you know why!
I am planning on being at the market this weekend, with raw honey, comb honey, and a limited supply of chicken and duck eggs. If you want eggs, come early as I have been selling out the last couple of weeks!

Shooting Star Farm
It was a rainy one last Saturday. Thank you to everyone who still showed up to support local producers. We appreciate you!! This weekend we welcome our Cornish friends with lots of activities throughout the weekend. Make the Market a part of your Saturday morning line-up. This week I plan to bring the first of my winter squash and everyone’s favorite: delicata. It’s moist and sweet, and you can even eat the skin. Slice it into rings (skin and all), coat with brown sugar and butter or olive oil and roast until tender and caramelized. More squash varieties will show up in following weeks as they are cured and ready for sale. Other items I hope to harvest include red tomatoes, heirlooms, cherry tomatoes, roma tomatoes, fennel, green, colorful bell peppers, gorgeous red and orange frying peppers, yummy snacking peppers, a bit of eggplant, scallions, mixed beets, salad mix, arugula, curly kale, lacinato kale, possibly some salad turnips, baby bok choy, a variety of onions, shallots, dill, cilantro, parsley, thyme, and sage. Saturday’s weather forecast looks good. See you then!
