Hello MP Market Goers!

From Lens to Land: A Look at Our Homestead

If you’ve been visiting the Mineral Point Market for any length of time, chances are you’ve met Mike Smith — or at least admired one of his breathtaking photographs. Once known at market as Magic Light Photography, Mike spent years capturing the quiet beauty of Wisconsin’s natural world. His lens introduced us to elusive badgers, curious foxes, serene lakes, delicate wildflowers, MP’s 4th of July Fireworks, and the iconic Hyde’s Mill — all moments of wonder he generously shared with our community.

But as life does, it evolved — and so did Mike’s path. Today, his booth wears a new name: Our Homestead. It’s more than a name change; it’s a beautiful new chapter.

Together with his family, Mike has transitioned from chasing wildlife with a camera to nurturing life on their own farm. From ducks and chickens to bees, gardens, and growing boys, their homestead is a vibrant labor of love rooted in the same deep appreciation for nature that once filled his photo albums. And yes — Mike still picks up his camera, now often capturing the sweet chaos of family farm life.

Recently, you may have seen Mike in action at the Mineral Point Historical Society’s Garden Tour, where he was busy extracting honey and sharing his beekeeping knowledge. And if you happened to sample his local honey — you know it’s as golden and pure as it gets!

🍯 Sweeten Your Day: Whipped Honey Butter
Want a delicious and easy way to enjoy Mike’s honey? This whipped honey butter is perfect on toast, cornbread, biscuits, or pancakes!

Ingredients:
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
¼ cup Mike’s local honey
¼ tsp cinnamon (optional, but highly recommended)
Pinch of salt

Instructions:
Beat the softened butter in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy.
Add in honey, cinnamon, and salt. Beat again until fully combined and airy.
Spoon into a jar and store in the fridge. Bring to room temp before serving for spreadable bliss!

You can find Mike and Our Homestead at the market this Saturday with their fresh eggs, upcycled market totes, and of course — that incredible local honey.

Whether you’re picking up pantry staples, catching up with friends over coffee, or just soaking in the summer vibes, we’d love to see you there!

Aaron’s Peppers
Several people have asked, “When can we expect to see your peppers at the market?”
Well, believe it would help to share the “life of” the 2025 HOT chile pepper selections: Brazilian Starfish and (the 2024 favorite) Bulgarian Carrot.
2024 – Search for unique HOT chile peppers with interesting flavors.
January – sow seeds. (Germinated quickly using a heat pad and dome.)
Plant in peat pots filled with starter (loose) mix.
Set under grow light. Use fan to strengthen stems. Water and fertilize.
Fast forward to May – harden off. (2 cut clean off by curious bunnies.)
21 holes dug using manual post hole digger.

Our Homestead formerly Magic Light Photography
Wow, it’s hard to believe that this is going to be the last market for the month of July already. The summer is flying by way too fast! We have been very busy on our little farm trying to keep up with mowing, putting in a new pond for the ducks, tending to the chickens and the bees, getting the boys to and from summer camps, getting ready for the garden tour and harvesting honey! I am planning on being at the market this weekend and fully stocked with fresh from the hives, raw honey! I will have all four sizes available ranging from 1/2 pound to a full quart jar that is nearly 3 pounds of golden goodness! Of course I will also have our farm fresh, pasture raised chicken and duck eggs as well as our upcycled market totes made from feed bags. Also of note, I will not be at the market on August 2nd, so plan ahead if you need to stock up!
Thanks,
Mike

Want to try the incredible Reverse Sear method?
Low & Slow: Season steak and place it on a rack in a 250°F oven. Cook until the desired internal temperature is reached (around 115°F for medium-rare).
Rest: Remove the steak and let it rest for 10-15 minutes.
Sear: While resting, heat a cast iron skillet or grill to high heat. Add a high-heat oil (like avocado oil) and sear for 1-2 minutes per side until a crust forms.
Enjoy! Slice and enjoy a perfectly cooked, juicy steak!
See you Saturday!

Last Saturday’s Market was a bit soggy, but we were so glad you still showed up to support us. Thanks so much! Looks like we might get rain again this weekend, but hopefully not until Market has ended. Rain or shine, I will be there with cherry tomatoes, saladette tomatoes, and a limited amount of red and heirloom tomatoes (those larger varieties are being slow to ripen). We are also harvesting green beans, fresh white and Italian bottle onions, a new crop of carrots, the first eggplant, some bell and Italian frying peppers, jalapeno peppers, shishito peppers, fennel, beets, kale, basil, and lots of cucumbers and zucchini. We’ll see what we can come up with for lettuce and salad greens this week. Hopefully something. See you Saturday!
