Hello MP Market Goers!

June is officially Dairy Month in Wisconsin, and here in America’s Dairyland, that’s something worth celebrating!
Wisconsin’s dairy heritage runs deep. Our state is home to nearly 5,000 dairy farms—more than any other state in the nation—and approximately 1.27 million dairy cows. The dairy industry contributes an estimated $45.6 billion annually to Wisconsin’s economy, and when it comes to cheese, Wisconsin stands alone, producing roughly 25% of all the cheese made in the United States and leading the nation in specialty cheeses.
One of the most beloved Dairy Month traditions is the Breakfast on the Farm. Throughout June, dairy farms across Wisconsin open their barns and out-buildings to the public, serving farm-fresh breakfasts, offering tours, and giving visitors a chance to see firsthand where their food comes from. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with the families and farms that help make Wisconsin agriculture so special.
And speaking of special, we’re fortunate to have a world-renowned cheesemaker right here in Mineral Point.

Each week at the market, PJ’s Poultry brings not only their home-raised chicken but also a selection of cheeses from Hook’s Cheese, whose award-winning cheddars have earned recognition far beyond Wisconsin’s borders. It’s a reminder that some of the very best foods are being produced right here in our own community.

As you celebrate Dairy Month this June, consider building a meal around local ingredients. Pair Wisconsin cheese with fresh greens, seasonal vegetables, artisan breads, and locally raised meats—all available from your favorite Mineral Point Market vendors.
Want to make a your celebration a weekend outing, you can browse the full list of dates, locations, and participating farms on the Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin events page or explore regional culinary experiences via Travel Wisconsin.
Whether you’re heading to a dairy breakfast, gathering with family, or simply enjoying a Saturday morning in the park, we hope you’ll take a moment to appreciate the farmers, cheesemakers, and producers who help make Wisconsin such a remarkable place.

The weather is looking great for another Market this weekend, and I will be back with eggs and honey! As much as I like this nice spring weather with cool nights and mornings, and warm days, we sure could use some rain! The hens 🐔 and bees 🐝 have been taking advantage of this weather and both have been out foraging like crazy! Our fridge is overflowing with chicken and duck eggs, and the bees are packing in nectar and turning it into honey. I may be able to harvest some honey before the end of the month! 🤞
We weren’t planning on expanding our flock this year but that has changed quickly. First, my wife brought home 21 chicks 🐣, and 4 new ducklings that were hatched at school. Normally those get sent home with students, but somehow we ended up with all of them! Then on Sunday my wife discovered one of our hens had been hiding a clutch of eggs under our deck. So that hen is now busy raising 9 tiny little chicks 🐣! On Tuesday I ran to Farm & Fleet for a couple things, and ended up coming home with 6 turkey chicks. Somehow we went from not expanding our flock, to adding 40 new birds! Chicken math is real!
This week I will have lots of chicken & duck eggs 🥚 , as well as 1/2 pound bottles of raw, local honey 🍯. Hope to see you Saturday!
Thanks,
Mike

Shooting Star Farm
Looks like some much needed rain is on the way for Friday. I’ve been rushing to get things planted before what I hope is a good soaking. I’ll be glad to stop watering for a while. Most of my spring hoophouse crops are nearly done, except for carrots. Yes, carrots! I’ll have some fresh bunches on Saturday. This will be my first harvest off the patch, so they may be limited. Other items on the hopeful harvest list include bunched beets, red leaf lettuce, kohlrabi, salad turnips, arugula, salad mix, curly and lacinato kale, Swiss chard, red radishes (fingers crossed on this one), garlic scapes, and cilantro. Should be a sunny, beautiful morning. See you Saturday!

WWB Studio
Wayne Banaszak taught drawing and painting and graphic design to students grade one through adults in the public schools for over thirty years. He is now sharing his artistic talents through his original watercolor pencil drawings of rural scenes from the Driftless Area of Wisconsin as well as various other subjects that complement his style of drawing. Many of the original drawings have been turned into note cards which he markets locally. New to his note card collection is a line of interesting sayings and words of wisdom. All of these will be on display at the market. It is his intention to attend all Saturday markets weather permitting. Rain and paper do not get along, so he will not be in attendance on rainy, humid days.
We look forward to seeing you Saturday in Water Tower Park, Business Hwy 151 at Madison Street, Mineral Point! 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.
